In November 2023, our IB students travelled to Kigali, Rwanda for the first time as part of a CAS project and in cooperation with the associations Kinder brauchen Frieden e.V. and Sinapisi NGO. There, they had the opportunity to volunteer in the construction of a school wall at St. Jacob Primary School and in teaching.
DS Izmir
Cooperation between schools is an excellent opportunity to enable cultural exchange and promote mutual understanding. Such a cooperation was started during Didacta 2023 between the
German International School Sharjah (DISS) and the German School Izmir in Turkey (DS Izmir).
It started with a student exchange of grades 10 -12 in October 2023. The students of the DISS were accompanied by Mr. Dilek, the
Deputy Headmaster, and Ms. Rüffer, the IB coordinator, while they visited their partner school in Izmir. They were warmly welcomed by their
host families and integrated into everyday school life. The project week on the topic of „100 Years of Turkey“, which was carried out during this week
was particularly impressive. In addition, the students undertook exciting excursions, including a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ephesus.
During this time, the students forged close connections with each other and were already looking forward to the following meeting. At the end of January 2024, a significant event took place: Ten exchange students from DS Izmir, accompanied by the IB coordinator Ms. Ünal and another teacher, Ms. Aygün, paid a visit to the DISS in Sharjah. The hosts gave their
friends a warm welcome and made sure they had an unforgettable experience.
The students had great shared experiences at various school events such as the Bundesjugendspiele and the hiking day. In addition, they explored the cities of Dubai and Sharjah together and went on an exciting desert safari.
There were emotional moods at the airport when saying goodbye. This cooperation between the DISS and the DS Izmir has not only broadened the intellectual horizons of the participating students, but has also led to the creation of lasting friendships and a deep connection between the educational institutions.
